The color of the Cottonwood Forest (bosque) along the Rio Grande is a wonderful sight in fall. In this landscape you can see the Sandia Mountains in the distance, with the shadows falling in angles along the frosty ground. Enjoy the feeling of a hiking trail through the desert trails.
Because the Spanish completely deforested the ancient woods along the Rio Grande, the trees had to start again from the beginning. Because this allows mainly one species to develop at once, the Cottonwood trees are prevalent along the Rio Grande. Although its not great for the environment, and certainly the diversty of life and animals is more limited, it does make a beautiful ribbon of gold along the River which can be seen for miles.
