Ghost Dance was the name given to a sacred Night Dance for the Ancestors when the colonial settlers saw Native Americans dancing at night in elaborate ceremonies. Many dances include decorating the skulls of Buffalo, in order to honor the presence of the protective Buffalo spirit that gives us strength and nourishes us in the spirit world and in the physical. They were not dancing with Ghosts (which sounds rpetty spooky) but rather, with the spirits of the ancestors, and of angelic beings who had crossed over to the spirit world. This art honors and celebrates that Dance.
Spirit Dance is a more modern name for the same type of ceremony, and this painting is made in order to share a beautiful aspect of ceremony. We decorate the skulls with sage and flowers and ask the spirit of the animal to support us in our desire to heal our own DNA and trauma in order to heal the ancestors, and vice versa. We are all connected through our DNA, and when we have compassion for the relatives who went before us and what they may have experienced or suffered, then we are able to truly heal ourselves.
